What is INSTEON?

Since its inception in 2005, INSTEON® has become the best-selling wireless home-control networking technology, offering more reliability and flexibility than any other home management system on the market. Developed by SmartLabs®, INSTEON technology relies on its dual-mesh network to send signals both through the air (RF, or radio frequency) and over the existing electrical wires (power line) in the home.

How INSTEON Works

What makes INSTEON the most reliable home automation network is its dual-mesh network. INSTEON devices use both radio frequency signals and the home's existing wiring to talk to each other. Every message is confirmed as it is received, and if any errors are detected, the message is automatically resent.

Unlike all other mesh networks, INSTEON's mesh netowrk has every INSTEON device acting as a repeater -- receiving and sending every message to all other devices in the network. So instead of stressing the network by adding more INSTEON devices, you actually strengthen it (see how this works). Other mesh networks use router tables, and only those products involved in routing the signal act as repeaters - resulting in a less reliable network.

No central controller or networking setup is required. Once your module is installed, just use a series of button presses or taps to Link your devices together. INSTEON devices can act as a Controller, Responder or both!

Most importantly, INSTEON networks are extremely secure. Each INSTEON device is assigned a unique INSTEON ID, so unless neighbors or would-be hackers have access to your particular device's INSTEON ID, they won't be able to control your home, even if they are using similar products.

Tools You Will Need

  • A flathead screwdriver to remove the faceplate from the switch junction box
  • A Phillips screwdriver for the screws that hold the INSTEON device in its junction box
  • A wire cutter and stripper if the switch you are replacing requires you to cut the wires to remove them
  • A small Phillips screwdriver if you will be changing the color of the trim frame and paddle


A Helpful Tool – Voltmeter or Voltage Tester

During the installation of INSTEON devices, it may be necessary to identify the wires inside the junction box. Knowing for sure which wire is the LINE (sometimes called HOT) can reduce the guesswork when installing a single switch, and it is absolutely necessary when working with multi-way lighting circuits. A voltmeter is ideal for this application. Many of the digital models can also read current so you can measure how much power is being drawn by the switch’s load.

A simpler measurement tool, available at most home improvement centers, is a voltage sensor. This device, often costing less than $20, can sense voltage when placed near a wire. The tip of the voltage sensor can tell if voltage is on the wire without touching the bare copper conductor or breaking the insulation. When using these tools, be certain to read and understand the safety instructions. Often when these tools are used, the power to the circuit will need to be turned on. When working around live electrical wires, take your time and concentrate on the task.

Preparing to Install SwitchLinc

CAUTION!

Read and understand these instructions before installing, and retain them for future reference.

SwitchLinc Dimmer Switch is intended for installation in accordance with the National Electric Code and local regulations in the United States, or the Canadian Electrical Code and local regulations in Canada. Use indoors only. SwitchLinc is not designed, nor approved for use on power lines other than 120V 60Hz, single phase. Attempting to use SwitchLinc on non-approved power lines may have hazardous consequences.


Prior to installing SwitchLinc, please review the entire installation procedure and take the following precautions:

  • Do not use SwitchLinc to control an electrical outlet, because non-dimmable or inductive devices may be plugged into it
  • SwitchLinc may feel warm during operation. The amount of heat generated is within approved limits and poses no hazards. To minimize heat buildup, ensure that the area surrounding the rear of SwitchLinc has adequate ventilation by clearing away excess insulation.
  • Use indoors or in a properly insulated and weatherproof electrical box only
  • Be sure that you have turned off the circuit breaker or removed the fuse for the circuit you are installing SwitchLinc in. Installing SwitchLinc with the power on will expose you to dangerous voltages.
  • SwitchLinc requires a small amount of power to operate, which it receives from a connection to the NEUTRAL electrical wire (usually white). If you are replacing a standard mechanical switch with SwitchLinc, the switch you are replacing will not normally have a connection to the NEUTRAL wire. However, most junction boxes will contain a NEUTRAL wire that you can connect SwitchLinc to. If your junction box does not contain a NEUTRAL wire, please call Smarthome Tech Support at 1-800-SMARTHOME (800-762-7846) or consult an electrician.
  • Connect only copper or copper-clad wire to SwitchLinc
  • To reduce the risk of overheating and possible damage to other equipment, use SwitchLinc to control 110V incandescent lamps only. Dimming an inductive load, such as a fan or transformer, could cause damage to the dimmer, the load device, or both. If the manufacturer of the load device does not recommend dimming, use a non-dimming INSTEON On/Off Switch. USER ASSUMES ALL RISKS ASSOCIATED WITH DIMMING AN INDUCTIVE LOAD.
  • SwitchLinc can be mounted in a single or multiple-ganged junction box. However, SwitchLinc will control 200W less for each immediately adjacent SwitchLinc installed. For example, a 600W load control will become 400W with another electronic dimmer installed to the immediate right or left. Use a triple-gang box with a non-dimming INSTEON On/Off Switch in the center to avoid de-rating the load control.
  • Each INSTEON device is assigned a unique INSTEON ID, which is printed on a label on the front of the module. It is recommended that you prepare a list of all the INSTEON modules you are installing, including their INSTEON ID and their location (e.g. 01.F7.G5, Mike’s Bedroom light). It is only necessary to know the INSTEON ID if you will be using optional automation software (such as SmartLabs HouseLinc) to program and control your devices. However, it will be helpful to have a list of your devices, should you choose to use automation software later. Creating a list prior to installation will prevent you from needing to re-open all the junction boxes and fixtures to determine the INSTEON IDs later.

For High Wattage/1000W (2476DH) Models only:

  • If the dissipation fins prevent SwitchLinc from fitting in the desired installation location, the fins can be removed by grasping the edge of each fin with pliers, and bending the fin back and forth along the score until the fin breaks off. The removal of each individual fin reduces the SwitchLinc rated capacity by 100W, since removing the fins reduces the heat dissipation capacity. Removing a single fin reduces the SwitchLinc rating to 900W, removing 2 fins reduces capacity to 800W, and removing all 4 fins reduces capacity to 600W. Please note: dissipation fins cannot be reattached once removed.

Installing SwitchLinc

  1. At the circuit breaker or fuse panel, disconnect the power for all of the circuits in the switch junction box. Verify that the power is off by trying to turn on the lights controlled by the switches.

  2. Remove the faceplate from the switch you are replacing. Then, unscrew the switch itself and pull it out from the junction box.

  3. Disconnect the wires from the switch you are replacing. If the wires cannot be detached by unscrewing them, cut the wires where they enter the switch, then strip ½ inch of insulation off the ends.

  4. If you are installing SwitchLinc into a standard 2-way circuit (where only one switch controls the load), follow the diagram below to identify and connect the LINE, LOAD, NEUTRAL, and GROUND wires. If the colors of the wires do not match the diagram, be sure you have identified the wires correctly before connecting them.

  5. If you are installing SwitchLinc into a multi-way circuit (where more than one switch controls the load), follow the instructions in the section Installing SwitchLinc in a Multi-Way Circuit, to identify and connect the LINE, TRAVELER, NEUTRAL, and GROUND wires

  6. After you have connected all of the wires, ensure that all of the wire connectors are firmly attached and that there is no exposed copper except for the GROUND wire

  7. Gently place SwitchLinc into the junction box, orienting the unit with the LED bar on the left. Then, screw SwitchLinc into place.

  8. Turn the circuit breaker back on or reinstall the fuse

  9. After the bottom LED in the LED bar comes on, test that SwitchLinc is working properly by turning the light on and off

  10. Reinstall the faceplate

Installing SwitchLinc in a Multi-Way Circuit

Understanding Multi-Way Circuits

If more than one switch controls a single set of lights (called a load), the switches are part of a multi-way circuit. A 3-way circuit uses two switches to control a load, a 4-way circuit uses three switches, and so forth. Most homes have one or more 3-way circuits, with two switches located in hallways, stairwells, or two different entrances to a room. Less commonly found are circuits that are 4-way or above.

By creating virtual multi-way Circuits, you can use SwitchLinc to replace switches in multi-way circuits that are already wired in, or you can use them to create multi-way circuits where there is no existing wiring.

Here is how a typical wired-in 3-way circuit (with two switches) works with non-SwitchLinc switches:

A wired-in 4- or more-way non-SwitchLinc circuit (with three or more switches) has additional switches added in the middle of the circuit. In the diagram below, the additional switch is shown in one position in the upper box and in the other position below.

Using SwitchLinc in Virtual Multi-Way Circuits

In a virtual multi-way circuit, only one SwitchLinc, called the SwitchLinc Primary, actually controls the load in the multi-way circuit. Any additional SwitchLinc modules, called SwitchLinc Secondaries, are not connected to the load, but only to the power line (by being wired to the LINE and NEUTRAL wires). All of the SwitchLinc modules can communicate with one another using INSTEON networking on the power line. After wiring in the SwitchLinc modules, you create the virtual multi-way circuit by setting up all of the modules to control each other. See Cross-Linking More Than One INSTEON Device. The diagram below shows how you convert a wired-in 3-way circuit into a virtual 3-way circuit using two SwitchLinc modules.

  • Notice that one of the TRAVELER wires (TRAVELER 1, the red one) is not used, so you will cap it off at both ends with a wire nut
  • The other TRAVELER (TRAVELER 2, the black one) you will convert to a LINE wire. In the junction box where the SwitchLinc Secondary is, connect TRAVELER 2 to the existing LINE and also to the SwitchLinc Secondary’s LINE wire. In the other junction box at the other end, you will connect TRAVELER 2 to the SwitchLinc Primary’s LINE wire.
  • The SwitchLinc Primary’s LOAD wire gets connected to the actual lights that are being controlled
  • The LOAD wire for any SwitchLinc Secondaries that you will be installing will not be connected to anything, so cap those LOAD wires off with a wire nut
  • All SwitchLinc modules, whether they are Primaries or Secondaries, must be connected to NEUTRAL and to GROUND. Note that the switches you are replacing will not normally have a connection to NEUTRAL. If there is no NEUTRAL wire in the junction box (SwitchLinc will not function without a NEUTRAL), please consult an electrician or call Smarthome Tech Support at 1-800-SMARTHOME (800-762-7846).



Step-by-Step Instructions For Installing Multi-Way SwitchLinc Modules

When replacing a 3-way mechanical switch, each switch will have three wires connected to it from the wall box. Four-way or greater circuits will have four wires connected to the switches in the center of the circuit. For this tutorial, we will follow the most commonly used wire colors for homes in North America.

  1. Find the LINE wire. Your first task is to find out which switch junction box is the one where the electricity comes into the circuit. This box will contain the LINE wire (sometimes called HOT).
    • Disable power at the circuit breaker panel
    • Pull all the switches in the multi-way circuit out of their junction boxes. Each switch should have three wires connected to it. If the circuit is a 4-way or greater, some of the switches will have four wires.
    • Disconnect the wires from the old switches. If the wires cannot be detached by unscrewing them, cut the wires where they enter the switch, then strip ½ inch of insulation off the ends.
    • Making sure that none of the wires are touching anything and that no one is around the wall boxes, turn the electricity back on
    • Using a voltmeter or voltage sensor, individually test each wire for voltage. When you measure 120 Volts AC, that wire is the LINE wire (usually black).
    • The other two wires (usually black and red) are the TRAVELERS and go to the next junction box. TRAVELER wires are usually in the same cable sheath.
    • Turn off the electricity to resume installing the new SwitchLinc modules

  1. Connect the SwitchLinc Secondary’s LINE wire. The SwitchLinc that will be the Secondary goes in the junction box where you found the LINE wire. Connect the black LINE wire that you found, the black TRAVELER, and the black LINE wire on SwitchLinc all together with a single wire nut.

  1. Cap the other TRAVELER wire. The other TRAVELER wire (usually red) will not be used, so put a wire nut on the end of it.

  1. Cap the red LOAD wire from the SwitchLinc Secondary. Put a wire nut on the end of the SwitchLinc Secondary’s LOAD wire to ensure that it won’t connect to anything.

  1. Connect the SwitchLinc Secondary’s NEUTRAL wire. Locate the group of NEUTRAL wires (usually white) in the rear of the box. The old switch should not have been connected to the NEUTRAL wires, but SwitchLinc requires this connection in order to draw a small amount of power for itself (SwitchLinc will not function without a NEUTRAL). Connect SwitchLinc Secondary’s white NEUTRAL wire to the other NEUTRAL wires with a wire nut.

  1. Connect the SwitchLinc Secondary’s GROUND wire. Connect the bare copper GROUND wire to the other GROUND wires in the junction box.

  1. Install additional SwitchLinc Secondaries. If you have a 4-way or greater switching circuit, see Special Treatment for 4- or More-Way Circuits at the end of this section.

  2. Identify the wires for the SwitchLinc Primary. The SwitchLinc Primary is the SwitchLinc that will actually control the load. In the remaining junction box where you will install the SwitchLinc Primary, find the wire that carries power from the switch to the lights. This wire, called the LOAD wire, is commonly red.

    In the same junction box, there will also be the two TRAVELER wires from the first box, often both in the same cable sheath. Identify the TRAVELER wire (black) that you connected the LINE wire to in the first junction box.

    If you’re not sure which is the TRAVELER wire connected to the LINE wire, you can use the same method described in step 1 to find it. Turn on the power (taking the same precautions), and use a voltmeter to find the wire with 120 Volts AC on it. This wire is the TRAVELER wire that you connected to the LINE wire in the first junction box.

    Make sure the power is turned off again before proceeding.

  1. Connect the SwitchLinc Primary’s LINE wire. Use a wire nut to connect the TRAVELER wire (usually black) that you identified as connected to the LINE wire to the SwitchLinc Primary’s black LINE wire.

  1. Connect the SwitchLinc Primary’s NEUTRAL and GROUND wires. Follow the same instructions as before in steps 5 and 6 for the SwitchLinc Secondary.

  2. Complete installation. Return to Installing SwitchLinc and continue on from step 6.




Special Treatment for 4- or More-Way Circuits

If your lighting circuit includes more than two switches controlling a single set of lights, those extra switches will have four wires connected to them. Two of the wires are TRAVELERS from the preceding switch and the other two are TRAVELERS to the next switch in the chain. You will be converting the black TRAVELER wires to LINE wires and replacing the old 4-wire switches with SwitchLinc Secondaries.

  1. Connect the SwitchLinc Secondary’s LINE wire. Use a wire nut to connect both black TRAVELER wires to the SwitchLinc Primary’s black LINE wire.

  2. Cap the two unused TRAVELERS. The other two TRAVELER wires (usually red) will not be used, so put wire nuts on the ends of them.

  3. Cap the red LOAD wire from the SwitchLinc Secondary. Put a wire nut on the end of the SwitchLinc Secondary’s LOAD wire to ensure that it won’t connect to anything.

  4. Connect the SwitchLinc Secondary’s NEUTRAL and GROUND wires. Use the same instructions given previously in steps 5 and 6, above.

                        Using the Paddle

                        The paddle top makes your light go on and the paddle bottom makes your light go off.
                        • Tap the paddle top to make your light turn on at the local Ramp Rate, from whatever brightness it currently has to the local On-Level brightness
                        • Tap the paddle bottom to make your light turn off at the local Ramp Rate, from whatever brightness it currently has to full-off
                        • Double-tap the paddle top to make your light go full-on quickly.
                        • Double-tap the paddle bottom to make your light go full-off quickly.
                        • Press & hold the paddle top to gradually brighten your light from whatever brightness it currently has to full-on.
                        • Press & hold the paddle bottom to gradually dim your light from whatever brightness it currently has to full-off.

                        Using the Air Gap

                        The "air gap" can be useful for replacing bulbs or any other time you want the controlled circuit to be unpowered without turning off the circuit breaker.

                        To disable power, pull the Set button at the bottom of the switch out as far as it will go (about 1/8 inch). This will open the mechanical contacts and will remove all power from the INSTEON device and the load that it controls until the Set button is pushed back in. However, because the INSTEON device's settings are stored in non-volatile memory, setup information will not be lost when the unit is unpowered.

                        To restore power, tap the air gap back into place, until its top is even with the trim frame.

                        BE CAREFUL: If you press the Set button in too far, you might inadvertently reset the INSTEON device to its factory default settings. Make sure to only push the Set button down so that it is flush with the trim frame.

                        Linking SwitchLinc to Control an INSTEON Device

                        To use SwitchLinc as an INSTEON Controller, follow these steps to Link SwitchLinc and an INSTEON Responder (the device you wish to control with SwitchLinc) together. Refer to your Responder’s Owner's Manual for detailed instructions on how to properly install and Link it to SwitchLinc.

                        The following will work for the most common INSTEON devices:
                        1. Set SwitchLinc to Linking Mode by pressing & holding the paddle top for 10 seconds
                          The top LED in the SwitchLinc LED bar will begin blinking and the light it is wired to will flash once

                          You will have 4 minutes to complete the next steps before Linking Mode automatically times out.
                          NOTE: Any paddle press will exit Linking Mode early.

                        1. At the Responder you wish to control from SwitchLinc, set it to the state you wish to activate from SwitchLinc (turn it on if you wish it to be on, or off if you wish it to be off when SwitchLinc activates the scene).
                          • If the Responder is a multi-scene device (e.g., KeypadLinc) tap the Scene button you wish to control until its LED illuminates.

                        2. Press & hold the Responder's Set button for 3 seconds
                          Most Responders will beep once, then double-beep when the Link has been established
                          If your Responder is a dimmable device, it will flash its controlled light twice
                          The light wired to SwitchLinc will flash once and the LED will stop blinking and turn on solid

                            Unlinking a Controlled INSTEON Device From SwitchLinc

                            If you are no longer going to use an INSTEON device that has previously been Linked to SwitchLinc, it is very important that you Unlink it. Otherwise, SwitchLinc will retry any commands intended for the unused INSTEON device, thus slowing down your system.

                            The following will work for the most common INSTEON devices:

                            1. Set SwitchLinc to Linking Mode by pressing & holding the paddle top for 10 seconds
                              The top LED in the LED bar will begin blinking and the light it is wired to will flash once

                            2. Set SwitchLinc to Unlinking Mode by pressing & holding the paddle top for another 10 seconds
                              The light it is wired to will flash once again and the LED will continue blinking
                              You will have 4 minutes to complete the next step before Unlinking Mode automatically times out.

                            3. Follow the same method you used to Link your INSTEON Responder to Unlink it. (On most INSTEON devices, you just push an On button for 10 seconds or a Set button for 3 seconds.)
                              Most Responders will beep once, then double-beep when Unlinking has been established
                              If your Responder is a dimmable device, it will flash its controlled light twice
                              The light wired to SwitchLinc will flash once and the LED will stop blinking and turn on solid
                            4. Test that SwitchLinc no longer controls the Responder by pressing the paddle top and bottom on the SwitchLinc you just Unlinked

                            Linking an INSTEON Controller to SwitchLinc

                            To use SwitchLinc as a Responder to an INSTEON Controller, follow these steps to Link SwitchLinc and the Controller together. Refer to your Controller's Owner's Manual for detailed instructions on how to properly install and Link it to SwitchLinc.

                            The following will work for the most common INSTEON devices:

                            1. Set your Controller to Linking Mode. (For most Controllers, you just press an On or Scene button for 10 seconds, or the Set button for 3 seconds.)

                                        About On-Levels and Ramp Rates

                                        The On-Level is the brightness that the light you are controlling will go to when you turn it on. The On-Level is adjustable from off to 100% brightness. The default is 100%.

                                        The Ramp Rate sets the time it will take for the light you are controlling to go from off to the On-Level brightness, or from the On-Level brightness to off. This time is adjustable from 0.1 seconds to ramp between full-on and full-off. The default is 0.1 seconds (or 0.5 seconds for SwitchLinc models only).

                                        On-Levels and Ramp Rates may be activated in two ways:

                                        • Locally, by tapping the On/Off button on the device itself (SwitchLinc paddle, ToggleLinc toggle, KeypadLinc button, etc.)
                                        • Remotely, by tapping the On/Off button on a Linked Controller

                                        A single INSTEON device is capable of storing multiple On-Levels and Ramp Rates. If you'd like, you can Link different On-Levels or Ramp Rates for each Controller (or each button if it is a multi-scene Controller).

                                        You establish an On-Level and Ramp Rate by first setting them up and then locking them in. Setting an On-Level and setting a Ramp Rate are always done the same way, but locking them in is different, depending on what you want the On-Level and Ramp Rates to apply to.

                                        You can set up an On-Level or Ramp Rate in any order, (but it is recommended to set up the Ramp Rate first). When you do the lock-in, the currently set On-Level and Ramp Rate are locked in together.

                                        Setting the On-Level

                                        The On-Level is the brightness that the light you are controlling will go to when you turn it on. The On-Level is adjustable from off to 100% brightness. The default is 100%.
                                        To set your dimmer's On-Level:
                                        1. Use either the local buttons on your INSTEON dimmer or a Linked INSTEON Controller to adjust the light to the desired brightness
                                          • Press & hold the On button on the INSTEON dimmer or Controller to brighten the light. Release at the desired brightness.
                                          • Press & hold the Off button on the INSTEON dimmer or Controller to dim the connected light. Release at the desired brightness.

                                        2. Once the desired brightness had been achieved, tap the Set button on your dimmer once
                                          The controlled light will flash once
                                          (Some INSTEON models will beep once)
                                        3. The local On-Level has now been set. If you would like to set up a Controller to set your dimmer to the above On-Level, proceed to step 4.

                                        4. Choose the desired button on your INSTEON Controller and Link it to your INSTEON dimmer (see the Controller's Owner's Manual)

                                        5. Test the On-Level settings by pressing the On/Off buttons on your INSTEON dimmer or Controller

                                        If you are setting an On-Level to a new device for the first time, you will need to set the On-Level twice.
                                        Dimmable INSTEON devices are programmed to lock in at full-brightness the very first time an On-Level is set. After the initial On-Level setup, you will be able to lock in the On-Level at any brightness level.

                                        NOTE:
                                        If the INSTEON dimmer is blinking its Status LED, you held the Set button down too long. Holding down the Set button for 3 seconds is an alternate way to place the INSTEON dimmer into Linking Mode.
                                        Linking Mode will time out after 4 minutes of inactivity. To manually exit Linking Mode, tap any button except the Set button.

                                        Setting the Ramp Rate

                                        The Ramp Rate sets the time it will take for the light you are controlling to go from off to the On-Level brightness, or from the On-Level brightness to off. This time is adjustable from 0.1 to 9 seconds to ramp between full-on and full-off. The default is 0.1 seconds (or 0.5 seconds for SwitchLinc models only).
                                        To set your dimmer's Ramp Rate:
                                        1. Use either the local buttons on your INSTEON dimmer or an INSTEON Controller to adjust the Ramp Rate of your light
                                          • Press & hold the On button on the INSTEON dimmer or Controller to brighten the light. The brighter the light is during this step, the faster the Ramp Rate will be.
                                          • Press & hold the Off button on the INSTEON dimmer or Controller to dim the light. The dimmer the light is during this step, the slower the Ramp Rate will be.

                                          The following table gives the approximate relationship between the brightness you set and the Ramp Rate you get.

                                        4. Choose the desired button on your Controller and Link it to your INSTEON dimmer (see the Controller's Owner's Manual)

                                        5. Test the Ramp Rate settings by pressing the On/Off buttons on your
                                          INSTEON dimmer or Controller

                                          NOTE: If the light is ramping to less than full brightness, then the time it will take will be proportionately less. For instance, if the light is going to be half brightness, the time it will take for a given Ramp Rate will be halved.


                                          BE CAREFUL

                                          If the controlled light flashes twice or you heard two beeps, you didn’t double-press the Set button fast enough, and the INSTEON dimmer's On-Level was actually set up twice. Reset the correct On-Level and try the Ramp Rate setting again.

                                        Creating an INSTEON Scene

                                        INSTEON scenes let you activate dramatic lighting moods with the press of just one button. For example, you can set all your lights in a scene to dim to 50%, or turn certain lights on while turning others off, all with one tap on a Controller.

                                        INSTEON scenes are very easy to set up - just Link more than one INSTEON Responder to the same On/Off or Scene button pair on an INSTEON Controller. Then, when you press any of the Linked buttons on the Controller, all of the INSTEON devices Linked in the scene will respond as a group.

                                        To set up an INSTEON scene, you can individually Link each device to your Controller (see your device's Owner's Manual for instructions on how to Link the device to a Controller). Or, save time and create multiple Links by Multi-Linking.

                                        Multi-Linking and Multi-Unlinking

                                        Multi-Linking

                                        Multi-Linking Mode allows you to Link multiple INSTEON devices to a single Controller, one after the other. Once in Multi-Linking Mode, you can Link any number of Responders without having to press & hold the Controller's On button for 10 seconds for each Responder. Using Multi-Linking Mode is the fastest way to create an INSTEON scene.

                                        The following will work for the most common INSTEON devices:

                                        1. At the Controller, press & hold the desired On or Scene button for about 10 seconds

                                        2. Tap the same On or Scene button again
                                          Multi-Linking Mode will automatically time out after 4 minutes of inactivity.

                                        3. For each of the Responders you wish to control, set the light to the state you wish to activate from the Controller (turn it on if you wish it to be on, or off if you wish it to be off when the Controller activates the scene)
                                          • If the Responder is a multi-scene device (e.g., KeypadLinc), tap the Scene button to illuminate the LED. (If you wish the Responder's scene to turn off, tap the Scene button again to turn the LED off, then proceed to the next step.)

                                        4. One at a time, press & hold each of the Responder's Set buttons for about 5 seconds

                                        5. After you have Linked all the desired Responders, tap the Controller's Set button to exit Multi-Linking Mode

                                        6. Test that your INSTEON scene is working by pressing the On/Off buttons on the Controller you just Linked

                                        Multi-Unlinking

                                        Multi-Unlinking Mode can be used to quickly remove devices from an INSTEON scene. You may remove as many of the Linked Responders from the scene as you would like.

                                        The following will work for the most common INSTEON devices:

                                        1. At the Controller, press & hold the Off or Scene button you wish to Unlink for about 10 seconds

                                        2. Press & hold the same button on the Controller for another 10 seconds

                                        3. Tap the same button

                                          You will have 4 minutes of inactivity before Multi-Unlinking Mode automatically times out.

                                        4. For each of the Responders you wish to Unlink:
                                          • If the Responder is a multi-scene device (e.g., KeypadLinc), tap the Scene button you wish to Unlink
                                          • Press & hold the Responder's Set button for about 5 seconds

                                        5. After you have Unlinked the desired Responders, tap the Controller's Set button to exit Multi-Unlinking Mode

                                        6. Test that you have removed the desired devices from the INSTEON scene by pressing the On/Off buttons on the Controller you just Unlinked

                                        Cross-Linking More Than One INSTEON Device

                                        Cross-Linking in a 3-Way Circuit

                                        Cross-Linking switches allows you to track the on/off status of the load on all Linked INSTEON switches. For this example we will use a primary switch controlling the load and one secondary in a virtual 3-way. They will be referred to as: Primary Switch (load-controlling) and Secondary Switch.

                                        1. Link Primary Switch to Secondary Switch (using Primary Switch as the Controller)

                                        2. Cross-Link Secondary Switch to Primary Switch (using Secondary Switch as the Controller)

                                        Upon successful completion, each switch in the above scenario will now track the on/off status on the LED of the other switches it has been Cross-Linked to.

                                        Cross-Linking in a Multi-Way Circuit Using Multi-Link Mode

                                        When you have more than two switches controlling a single light, you can use a feature called Multi-Linking to Link one switch to multiple others in one step. But remember, for Cross-Linking, all non-load-controlling switches need to be Linked to the load-Controlling switch in a complete Link (meaning the load-controlling switch to the controlled switch, then from the controlled switch to the load-controlling switch).

                                        For this example, we will use a primary switch controlling the load and two secondary switches in a virtual 4-way. They will be referred to as: Primary Switch (load-controlling), Secondary Switch 1, and Secondary Switch 2.

                                        1. Press & hold the Primary Switch in the on position for about 10 seconds

                                        2. Tap the Primary Switch Set button

                                        3. You can now Link Primary Switch to your remaining switches. Go to Secondary Switch, and press & hold it in the on position for about 10 seconds

                                        4. Repeat step 3 for each additional switch
                                          NOTE: Because you are Linking more than one switch to Primary Switch, the Primary Switch LED will not stop blinking until all other switches are Linked and the circuit is complete.

                                        5. To complete the circuit, tap the Primary Switch On button once

                                        To finish the Multi-Linking process between all your switches, you must repeat steps 1 through 5, using each secondary switch as the starter switch.

                                        Upon successful completion, each switch in the above scenario will now track the on/off status on the LED of the other switches it has been Cross-Linked to.

                                        NOTE:

                                        These instructions are universal to all INSTEON devices. However, responses of the individual devices may vary, depending on the revision of the product (i.e., LED color, beeper, etc.). Refer to each device’s Owner’s Manual for specific responses during Linking procedures.

                                        Restoring Power to SwitchLinc

                                        This INSTEON device stores all of its settings in non-volatile memory, so the settings are not lost even when power is removed. In the event of a power loss, this device will automatically return the local load to the level it had before the power was interrupted.

                                        Resetting SwitchLinc to Its Factory Default Settings

                                        The factory reset procedure can be used to clear the SwitchLinc memory and restore its factory default settings. This procedure will clear the unit of all INSTEON Links, and any programmed X10 Primary Addresses or X10 Scene Addresses.

                                        1. Before resetting a SwitchLinc that has been Linked to an INSTEON Controller, be sure to Unlink it from the Controller first. See Unlinking SwitchLinc from an INSTEON Controller.

                                        2. If you are using SwitchLinc to control any INSTEON devices other than the light it is wired to, Unlink those devices from SwitchLinc. See Unlinking a Controlled INSTEON Device from SwitchLinc.

                                        3. Gently pull the Set button at the bottom of the paddle out as far as it will go (about 1/8"). This "Air Gap" removes all power to SwitchLinc.
                                          The Status LED and the light it is wired to SwitchLinc will turn off

                                        4. After 10 seconds, push the Set button all the way down and hold for 3 seconds, then release
                                          A few seconds after you release the Set button, the light it is wired to and the LED will turn on

                                          Factory reset is now complete. SwitchLinc is now reset to all the default settings and is ready for fresh programming and use.

                                        Note: Unless they have been Unlinked, devices that have been previously Linked to SwitchLinc will still respond to paddle presses, even after a factory reset. The reason is that the INSTEON devices themselves have not been Unlinked from SwitchLinc. Follow the procedure Unlinking a Controlled INSTEON Device from SwitchLinc.

                                        Setting the X10 Primary Address

                                        Most INSTEON devices are X10 ready, meaning that they can respond to X10 commands from any X10 Controller. However, to operate an INSTEON device in X10 mode, you must first set up an X10 Primary Address. As it ships from the factory, or after a factory reset procedure, INSTEON devices will have no X10 Primary Address set up.


                                        You must do this before your INSTEON device will respond to X10 commands. You can use any of the 256 possible X10 addresses for the X10 Primary Address.

                                        1. Set your INSTEON device to Linking Mode. (For most devices, you just press & hold an On or Scene button for 10 seconds, or a Set button for 3 seconds.)
                                          The device's LED will begin blinking and the controlled light will flash
                                          You will have 4 minutes to complete the next step before Linking Mode automatically times out.

                                        2. Using an X10 Controller, send the X10 Primary Address you want to assign, followed by the ON command three times.
                                          For example, to assign the address A1, you would send "A1 ON A1 ON A1 ON".

                                          Once the INSTEON device has received the sequence three times, it will exit Linking Mode.

                                        Removing the X10 Primary Address

                                        If you are no longer going to control an INSTEON device with an X10 Address, it is very important that you Unlink it, because otherwise the INSTEON device will respond to the X10 command and may cause the unit to turn on by itself.

                                        1. Set your INSTEON device to Unlinking Mode. (For most Controllers you press & hold an On or Scene button for 10 seconds twice or a Set button for 3 seconds twice.)
                                          The device's LED will begin blinking and the controlled light will flash for each 10 second interval
                                          You will have 4 minutes to complete the next step before Unlinking Mode automatically times out.

                                        2. Using an X10 Controller, send any X10 Address three times. It does not matter what the X10 Address is, as long as it is the same one each time.

                                          Once the INSTEON device has received the Address three times, it will exit Unlinking Mode.

                                        Setting the X10 Ramp Rate and X10 On-Level for the X10 Primary Address

                                        When an X10 Controller sends an X10 ON or X10 OFF command to the INSTEON dimmer’s Primary X10 Address, the local Ramp Rate and local On-Level apply. In other words, the INSTEON dimmer acts the same way as it would if you manually tapped its switch.

                                        See the section Setting the Ramp Rate and/or Setting the On-Level for instructions on setting up the local Ramp Rate and local On-Level.

                                        NOTE: If you want an X10 Ramp Rate and On-Level other than the local values, you can set up one or more X10 Scene Addresses as described in the sections Remotely Setting the Ramp Rate for an X10 Scene Address and Remotely Setting the On-Level for an X10 Scene Address.

                                        Enabling and Disabling X10 Resume Dim

                                        If X10 Resume Dim is enabled, the INSTEON dimmer will remember the last brightness level to which it was set. Then, when an X10 ON command is received from an X10 Controller, the light will go to the remembered brightness, rather than to the X10 On-Level.

                                        To enable X10 Resume Dim, set up a local On-Level of off (or zero). To disable X10 Resume Dim, set up a local On-Level of anything but off. See Setting the On-Level for instructions on setting up the local On-Level.

                                        About the Advanced X10 Programming Options

                                        You can remotely set up X10 Scene Addresses as well as On-Levels and Ramp Rates using an X10 Controller capable of sending an X10 address (house code and unit code) without sending X10 on or off commands. The following procedures in the next few sections will not work with a transmitter that sends the X10 address and an X10 command together. X10 Controllers in which one button is pressed to turn an X10 device on or off WILL NOT WORK.

                                        These procedures all begin by sending the same sequence of five X10 addresses, called the CLEAR Sequence. After you send the CLEAR Sequence, you have about 4 minutes to finish the procedure before automatic timeout.

                                        Remotely Setting the Ramp Rate for the X10 Primary Address

                                        If you use this method for setting the Ramp Rate, you can achieve Ramp Rates ranging from 0.1 second to ~8 minutes, 30 seconds. If you set the manual method in Setting the Ramp Rate, you can only achieve Ramp Rates ranging from 0.1 second to 9 seconds.

                                        Remotely setting the Ramp Rate has exactly the same effect as manually setting the local Ramp Rate.

                                        1. Using an X10 Controller, send the CLEAR Sequence:

                                        About X10 Scene Address Programming

                                        This INSTEON device can be a member of up to 255 X10 scenes. An X10 Scene Address is just another X10 address like the X10 Primary Address . When an X10 ON command is sent to an X10 Scene Address, every X10 scene-enabled device with that X10 Scene Address will turn on to its independent On-Level at its independent Ramp Rate (if a dimmable device). Sending an X10 OFF command to an X10 Scene Address will turn off all devices that are members of that X10 scene, each at its independent Ramp Rate. X10 scene-enabled devices will react to DIM and BRIGHT commands after the X10 Scene Address is sent (if the device is a dimmer). However, they will ignore ALL ON and ALL OFF commands for the X10 Scene Address.

If you skip this step, the current On-Level will be used. A scene can trigger the INSTEON dimmer to go off by setting the On-Level to 0%.

                                        Paddle and LED Color Options

                                        You can change the color of the SwitchLinc LEDs and paddle and trim frame to match the décor of any room.

                                        SwitchLinc comes standard with a white paddle assembly. You can optionally purchase ivory (#2400I), almond (#2400AL), black (#2400BK), brown (#2400BR), or gray (#2400GY) SwitchLinc Color Change Kits from Smarthome.com.

                                        Light-pipe color change kits for the LEDs are also available from Smarthome.com. SwitchLinc Indicator Color Change Kits (#2400L) are available in blue, red, frosted white or 4-color packs.

                                        Changing the Paddle and LED Colors

                                        You can remove the front paddle and trim frame assembly before or after SwitchLinc is installed. During the changeover process, the power and the Load may remain on and operating. There are no dangerous voltages or unsafe areas under the paddle.
                                        1. If SwitchLinc is already installed in the wall, remove the faceplate from the switch junction box

                                        2. Remove the four Phillips screws that hold the paddle assembly to the metal frame

                                        3. Pull the entire paddle from straight away from the switch. You may have to wiggle the bottom of the frame to get it free from the Set button.

                                        1. Using a flat blade or needle nose pliers, remove the large light pipe as shown. The light pipe will snap out of the frame. Do the same for the small light pipe.

                                        1. Orient the new small light pipe with its protrusion facing toward teh center of the frame and snap it into place. If placed in backwards or reversed, it will not click into place. Refer to the diagram on the right.

                                        2. Orient the new large light pipe with the side that has the most protrusions facing toward the center of the frame. Using only finger pressure, snap the light pipe into the frame.

                                        1. If both light pipes are installed correctly, they will stick straight out from the back of the frame. If installed incorrectly, they will appear to be tilted as shown in the photos below.

                                        1. Gently place the paddle assembly back onto the front of the SwitchLinc module. A little force may be necessary to snap the assembly over the Set button. Reinstall the four screws that you removed in step 2.

                                                  Understanding Why an INSTEON Network Is Reliable

                                                  INSTEON messages travel throughout the home via power line on the existing house wiring, or wirelessly via RF using Access Points or other dual-band products. As the messages make their way to the INSTEON devices being controlled, they are picked up and retransmitted by all other INSTEON devices along the way. This method of communicating, called a mesh network, is very reliable because each additional INSTEON device helps to support the overall network.

                                                  To further ensure reliability, every INSTEON device confirms that it has received a command. If an INSTEON Controller does not receive this confirmation, it will automatically retransmit the command up to five times.

                                                  Further Enhancing Reliability

                                                  As signals travel via the power line or RF throughout the home, they naturally become weaker the farther they travel. The best way to overcome signals getting weaker is to increase the coverage of the mesh network by introducing more INSTEON devices.

                                                  It is possible that some audio-video products, computers, power strips or other electrical equipment may attenuate INSTEON signals on the power line. You can temporarily unplug suspected devices to test whether the INSTEON signal improves. If it does, then you can plug in filters available from SmartLabs that will permanently fix the problem.

                                                  Using Dual-Band INSTEON Products to Upgrade Your INSTEON Network

                                                  Dual-band INSTEON products, such as Access Points, are ideal for improving signal strength and network coverage throughout your home. Dual-band products simultaneously transmit INSTEON signals to both power phases in your home (RF and power line). Without a reliable method for coupling opposite power phases some parts of your home may receive signals intermittently. With at least one dual-band product plugged into one of the power phases, and at least one more plugged into the opposite power phase, INSTEON signals will be strong everywhere in your home.

                                                  Dual-band products also translate RF signals into power line signals, allowing communication between RF-only and power line-only INSTEON devices. While only one properly installed dual-band product is needed to translate signals between the two phases, it is recommended to have at least two dual-band products for the best INSTEON network performance.

                                                  About INSTEON and X10

                                                  Possible BoosterLinc Interference with INSTEON

                                                  If you have installed older SmartLabs Plug-In BoosterLinc X10 Signal Boosters or certain other BoosterLinc-enabled products, the older BoosterLinc technology may interfere with INSTEON communications. Plug-In BoosterLinc X10 Signal Boosters, SmartLabs (#4827) shipped after February 1, 2005, with V3.0 or later firmware, are fully compatible with INSTEON.

                                                  The following Plug-In BoosterLinc X10 Signal Boosters use older firmware that may cause interference with INSTEON:

                                                  • White BoosterLinc X10 Signal Boosters (#4827) shipped before February 1, 2005, with V2.5 or earlier firmware
                                                  • All Gray BoosterLinc X10 Signal Boosters (#4827)

                                                  Try unplugging the older BoosterLinc X10 Signal Boosters to see if this helps with INSTEON interference, If it does, please call Smarthome Tech Support at 800-762-7846 for help with replacing your older BoosterLinc X10 Signal Boosters with newer INSTEON-compatible ones.

                                                  The following pre-INSTEON SmartLabs products have BoosterLinc technology that you can turn on or turn off when you set the X10 Address for the product. If turned on, the BoosterLinc technology may interfere with INSTEON.

                                                  You may then wish to install newer INSTEON BoosterLinc X10 Signal Boosters, which Smarthome Tech Support can help you with.

                                                  How INSTEON Effects X10

                                                  If your existing X10 devices seem to be working less reliably after installing INSTEON devices, remember that INSTEON devices can absorb X10 signals just as X10 devices do, and that INSTEON devices do not repeat X10 signals. Installing INSTEON-compatible BoosterLinc X10 Signal Boosters (#4827), or a SignaLinc Plug-In Coupler-Repeater (#4826), can increase X10 signal levels.

                                                  Troubleshooting SwitchLinc

                                                  Problem
                                                  Possible Cause
                                                  Solution
                                                  The LED bar on SwitchLinc is not turning on at all and it won't control my light. SwitchLinc is not getting power. Make sure the circuit breaker is turned on.
                                                  Make sure the Air Gap (Set button) is not pulled out.
                                                  Check junction box wires to ensure all connections are tight and no bare wires are exposed.
                                                  Check the light fixture to ensure all connections are tight and no bare wires are exposed.
                                                  The switch I'm replacing only has two wires. SwitchLinc needs a NEUTRAL wire in order to operate. Look in the rear of the junction box for a group of white wires all tied together with a wire nut. Those are the NEUTRAL wires. Connect the white SwitchLinc wire there.
                                                  SwitchLinc is not receiving signals from INSTEON or X10 Controllers. SwitchLinc and the Controller are on opposite power line phases. Make sure two Access Points are properly installed to bridge the two power line phases.
                                                  The Controller is plugged into a power strip. Power line signals can't travel through power filters. Plugging the Controller directly into a wall outlet works best.
                                                  Other modules are loading down the signal. Move the other modules or the Controller to another outlet.
                                                  SwitchLinc is not Linking to or working with an INSTEON Controller or device. The INSTEON signal may be too weak. Add new INSTEON devices or move around existing INSTEON devices. All INSTEON devices act as INSTEON network repeaters.
                                                  Make sure you are not experiencing interference with older X10 BoosterLinc technology. Upgrade to INSTEON BoosterLinc modules.
                                                  SwitchLinc doesn't always respond to an INSTEON Controller. The INSTEON Controller may have been reset without first Unlinking SwitchLinc from it. Re-link SwitchLinc to the INSTEON Controller. See Linking an INSTEON Controller to SwitchLinc.
                                                  The light turned on by itself. Another Controller, a timer, or stray X10 signals triggered SwitchLinc. Check scene membership and remove any unwanted Links from SwitchLinc, or perform a factory reset to clear it. See Resetting SwitchLinc to Its Factory Default Settings.
                                                  Install a power line signal blocker in your home to keep X10 signals from neighboring homes from interfering. Consider not using SwitchLinc in X10 mode.
                                                  If the above doesn't work, perform a factory reset. See Resetting SwitchLinc to Its Factory Default Settings.
                                                  The controlled light does not appear to turn on or off right away. The Ramp Rate may be set too slow. Set a shorter Ramp Rate. See Setting the Ramp Rate.
                                                  SwitchLinc turns on, but not off, using another Controller. The load is producing electrical noise that is interfering with the SwitchLinc reception of power line signal. Install a power line noise filter like SmartLabs' #4835 between the load and SwitchLinc.
                                                  Install additional INSTEON devices to boost the INSTEON signal.
                                                  Increase the X10 signal strength with an INSTEON-compatible X10 booster to overcome the power line noise.
                                                  My light only turns off when I tap the paddle top on SwitchLinc Dimmer Switch, but I can brighten and dim it. The On-Level may be set to fully-off or very dim. Set a brighter On-Level. See Setting the On-Level.
                                                  When I try to turn on my light with another Controller, the light turns on, then back off. SwitchLinc may be set up with an INSTEON On-Level at a high brightness and an X10 Primary or Scene Address On-Level at a low brightness. Remove the X10 Primary Address or X10 Scene Address from SwitchLinc. See Removing the X10 Primary Address or Remotely Removing an X10 Scene Address.
                                                  Remove the X10 Address from the button on your INSTEON Controller so it doesn't send both INSTEON and X10 commands.
                                                  When I press a button on SwitchLinc, it takes a long time for other INSTEON devices it is controlling to respond. You may have removed an INSTEON device that your SwitchLinc is trying to operate. SwitchLinc is retrying the missing INSTEON device. If the INSTEON device is still available, Unlink it from SwitchLinc. See Unlinking a Controlled INSTEON Device from SwitchLinc.
                                                  Perform a factory reset. See Resetting SwitchLinc to Its Factory Default Settings.
                                                  SwitchLinc doesn't respond to X10 address A1 when I first set it up. Unlike previous X10-only products, SwitchLinc does not have an X10 Primary Address set up at the factory. Set up an X10 Primary Address. See Setting the X10 Primary Address.
                                                  I'm having difficulty performing advanced X10 programming. The X10 "MNOP" house and unit codes were sent in the wrong order. Don’t hold down the buttons on your X10 controller too long, to avoid duplicate codes being sent.
                                                  The load is buzzing when on or dim. The dimming component inside SwitchLinc "chops" the power line sine wave to reduce the power. The bulb filaments are vibrating. Use rough-service, 130-volt, or appliance grade bulbs to reduce the noise.
                                                  Run SwitchLinc in the "full-on" mode or switch to a non-dimming SwitchLinc On/Off Switch.
                                                  SwitchLinc is locked up. A surge or excessive noise on the power line may have glitched it. Pull the Set button on SwitchLinc all the way out for 10 seconds to air-gap it, then push it back in without pushing it all the way down.
                                                  If the above doesn't work, perform a factory reset. See Resetting SwitchLinc to Its Factory Default Settings.
                                                  SwitchLinc is getting warm to the touch. It is normal for wall dimmers to get warm (but not hot). SwitchLinc will dissipate about one Watt per 100 Watts controlled. Using metal junction boxes, removing insulation around the outside of the box, or controlling a smaller load can help lessen the heat.
                                                  SwitchLinc can turn off my Responder, but nothing happens when I send an ON command from SwitchLinc. Your Responder may be Linked at its off state. Re-Link your Responder to SwitchLinc, while the responding device is on. See Linking at Off.
                                                  My Controller can turn off SwitchLinc, but SwitchLinc does not turn on when I send an ON command from my Controller. SwitchLinc may be Linked at its off state. Re-Link SwitchLinc to your Controller, while the light is on. See Linking at Off.
                                                  After wiring in SwitchLinc, the unit lets out a continuous beep. SwitchLinc is issuing an error beep because the unit is wired incorrectly. Turn off the circuit breaker and try reinstalling SwitchLinc. If you are still experiencing an error beep, consult an electrician to help you install SwitchLinc.
